Album

Candy Apple Grey is the fifth album by the alternative rock band Hüsker Dü, released in 1986. It was their first major label album, though Warner Bros. had initially lobbied to release Flip Your Wig until the band decided to let SST have it. Candy Apple Grey also marks the completion of the band's transition from hardcore punk to a more well-rounded sonic style which would later come to be known as alternative rock or college rock. As usual, Bob Mould and Grant Hart individually wrote tracks on the. Candy Apple Grey - Hüsker Dü. Much of Candy Apple Grey charges along on the same frenzied beat that propelled New Day Rising and Flip Your Wig, and both Bob Mould and Grant Hart are in fine form, spinning out fine punk-pop with Sorry Somehow and Don't Want to Know If You Are Lonely. However, the sound is beginning to seem a bit tired, which is what makes Mould's two acoustic numbers, Too Far Down and Hardly Getting Over It, so welcome. Their fifth album finds hardcore stalwarts Hüsker Dü going softer, layering acoustics over their typically frantic racket to create a timeless-sounding album. The six-minute Hardly Getting Over It wouldnt be out of place in a college dorm room today the soaring chorus on Sorry Somehow shows early shades of what would become pop-punk. To complete the bands growth on Candy Apple Grey, Too Far Down is a somber and mature ode to living with depression. Candy Apple Grey Hüsker Dü. Candy Apple Grey. Hüsker Dü - Candy Apple Grey 1986. Moving to a major label doesn't affect Hüsker Dü's sound greatly - although the production is more full-bodied than Spot's razor-thin work, the Hüskers don't change their blazing attack at all. We are republishing it now in the light of drummer, songwriter, and vocalist Grant Harts passing. The Hüskers have joined forces with the true hard corporation, a leap from indie salvation to major-label faith thats often found bands scissored between their own uncompromising rock and a hard place X marks the spot. For Hüsker Dü, the rite of passage comes at a fortuitous time. Candy Apple Grey from 1986 marks Hüsker Dü's sellout to the big nasty major label Warner Bros. So, naturally, this album is supposed to be a terrible album. sorry to disappoint you guys, but it ain't. It really ain't. Candy Apple Grey is without a doubt the most radio-friendly album to derive from Hüsker Dü. That sentence alone might just be enough to make some of the hardcore fans' stomachs turn. But have no fear, it's only a temporarily stomach-turn
